MY STORY

The reason
behind the routine.

I’m not here because every workout was perfect. I’m here because I kept coming back.

It started with
a reason to change.

“I wanted to reach retirement strong, capable and ready to enjoy the life I worked for.”

I’m John, and I’m 63 years old.

When I became a city bus driver at 46, I quickly discovered how easily a sedentary job could affect my health. Like many drivers, I started gaining weight. Something clicked in me: I didn’t want to reach retirement only to find that I wasn’t healthy or physically capable enough to enjoy it.

My first thought was running, but it was difficult, so I started by walking. I kept at it, gradually added short periods of running and eventually realized I had become a runner. Over that season, I lost 20 pounds. At that point, I never expected strength training to become such an important part of my life. Then I remembered something: almost every guy has an old set of weights stored somewhere in the basement. Mine had been put away and forgotten too.

I slowly brought those weights back out and began using them. There was no dramatic overnight transformation and no perfect plan. I simply continued showing up, learning and making gradual progress. Persistence became the most important part of everything I accomplished.

Today, I train with weights five days a week. I’m still learning, still challenging myself and still thinking about the same goal that started this journey: reaching retirement strong, capable and ready to enjoy the life I worked for.

I created Built Strong After 60 to share the workouts I actually follow, the lessons I’ve learned and the honest realities of staying fit as we age. I’m not a lifelong fitness professional, and I don’t claim to have all the answers. I’m simply proof of what can happen when an ordinary decision becomes a lasting commitment.

Persistence.

Motivation comes and goes. Persistence is what gets the weights out of the basement, finishes the ordinary workouts and turns a decision into a way of life.

More life
in the years.

This was never only about appearance. It was about having the energy, confidence and freedom to travel, explore and enjoy the years ahead.
